The Worth of Human Life

By: Josh Bullock

This Sunday is “Sanctity of Life Sunday” across the nation. The goal is to promote the value of all human life and contend against the forces of darkness attempting to destroy it, like those behind legalized abortion. Christians know that God creates human life. The following are truths the Scriptures teach about God creating human life.

1. GOD created Mankind with WORTH. Few Christians would dispute that God is the author and source of life. But many today are attempting to say that belief in the Bible and belief in Darwinian evolution can mesh. The idea then would be that God created the process of evolution and man eventually came to exist upon the earth. This does not agree with Scripture. The Bible says that God created a literal and fully-grown man named Adam and furthermore created an adult woman named Eve OUT OF THE MAN! The Bible also gives us a beautiful picture of God intimately creating man. He formed him out of the dust and breathed life into the nostrils of the man (Genesis 2:7). Humans are created in God’s own image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). God in his power and wisdom, though he is infinite and limitless, put some of his goodness into a being that is finite and limited. Humans are to be little reflective mirrors of God displaying his glory, goodness, light, and love throughout all of his creation. Psalm 8 tells us that God has crowned man with glory and honor and has made him the prize of His creation. An atheist can be pro-life. There are many who are in fact. People who do not believe in God can by common sense know that at the moment of conception a new person appears. They know that a tiny fetus is in fact human. But they have no power behind their pro-life argument because they do not know what it is to be human! If humans are no different from the animals, what difference does abortion make? Christians know the truth that human life is special and should not be murdered.

2. BROKEN by SIN, human life can be REMADE by JESUS. Of course, the sin in each of our lives has shattered the reflective mirror in us. We can still reflect some of the goodness of God just as you can still see yourself in a broken mirror, but the image is broken. The rebellion in man’s heart has led to his death and thus sin destroys the valuable life God created. However, through sending His son Jesus to die on the cross and conquer sin and death, God in mercy and love has made it possible for our sins to be forgiven and our lives to be remade. Jesus calls it in John chapter 3 being “born-again.” God in his love not only gives us our first birth and first opportunity at life, but also gives men the opportunity for new life through faith in Jesus the savior.

3. God is STILL creating man! Though men today are not created fully-grown as Adam and Eve were, God is still “hands-on” in the creative process. A “miracle” can be defined as a “direct” or “supernatural” work of God within his created system. It therefore is not a matter of his creative “clockwork” that will eventually happen because he set it up to occur that way, but is rather a direct intervening in human history such as parting the Red Sea during the exodus of the Israelites. The same kind of action is happening in the creation of human beings today. Of course the man and woman come together and they are the two necessary components, but people often forget or do not know what else the Bible says is going on in the womb. “Did not He who made me in the womb make him, and the same one fashion us both in the womb?” (Job 31:15). “Your hands fashioned and made me altogether….you clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews” (Job 10:8-11). “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” (Jeremiah 1:5).

Conclusion: These truths tell us about the loving nature of our God in creating us. They point us to our worth and value and thus the worth and value of every human being both young and old regardless of whether they are wanted by people or not. No person is an accident. God makes each one. They are valuable in His eyes. May they be greatly valued in ours as well.
